We recorded this album in Columbia Falls at my little apartment studio I was then calling, Big Sky Sound Lab. We tracked his acoustic demos out, his internal timing is flawless by the way, it was maybe 2-3 takes, and we were good on demos. Then I built drums and a digital band around the song, tried to help break the arrangement up for him, but well written tracks need little work. Once we got the track built to our liking, we went back and retracked his guitar and vocals to the finished product. I believe we were both happy with it at the time, later on, while playing with him in a band, The Stillwaters, we performed the songs in more of his originally written feel, and it worked so much better lol. We even shot a music video for This Old Guitar, that I shot and edited. It turned out alright I'd say. Hell of a time working with Bryant, and he's a great guy as well. Wish them the best!

This track was recorded at Sonic Bandit Studios in 2019-2020 as just a one off live demo. Jordan is one of my favorite musicians, and it doesn't matter if it's on guitar or drums, or singing. I love his sound. Of all the people I have worked with, I have so much admiration for his playing, ability to write killer songs, that are really him at heart, and his attitude, is always just on point. Truly one of the best guitar players I know, and on drums we worked telepathically it felt like. We were in a bunch of bands when we were younger, including The Youth, Marco!Polo! and some others with names I can't remember. We were young though, and they were all great time bands. Some of the best moments were spent in the jam room up near meadow lake in Monroe. That was what I always imagined being in a real band would be like as a kid.

He's a heck of a father and business owner now, but I bet you anything he shreds on anything, and maybe he's even playing that roadcaster I built and gave him for his birthday.

These long-forgotten files represent the raw, unpolished beginnings of a lifelong pursuit of signal.

### The Vocal Roots
Unlabeled tape envelopes. The voice of a 24-year-old traveler preserved in digital amber. As we feed the wave transients into our database matrix, it feels like digging up glowing copper roots in dark chassis soil. We align the clock signals under a late May eclipse, hoping the ancient frequency does not nullify our modern filters. By separating the vocals from the background hum, we expose the emotional kernel of the recording.

What we find in these takeout files is more than just data; it is an archaeology of resonance. Each cassette recording carries a unique print of tape saturation, wow and flutter, and room tone. By using our machine learning models, we can extract these 'ghosts' from the digital dust and rebuild the missing frequencies, restoring life to the whispers of a past timeline. This process aligns perfectly with our search for patterns in space and time, discovering the threads that connect our early trials to the systems we build today.

Celestial Extraction: The Takeout Ghosts

Automating audio production pipelines requires blending high-level software orchestration with low-level signal processing. In my latest setup, I provisioned a 4-core, 16GB RAM Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) bridge running an OpenClaw daemon alongside a dedicated OLLAMA_HOST context. This allows running python-driven key/BPM analysis locally in Linux and flushing midi-mapped transient grids into REAPER projects on the Windows host.

### The Scripting Loop
Using Python libraries like librosa and madmom, we ingest raw .wav stems, detect transient onset drifts, smooth out the tempo using rolling arithmetic, and format the output into .RPP (REAPER Project) XML code blocks. It enables generating ready-to-mix session files with automatically configured tempos in seconds.

### Bridging the OS Divide
The primary challenge of this architecture was the latency introduced by inter-process communication between the WSL Linux environment and the Windows host system. We resolved this by establishing a lightweight WebSocket pipeline that handles command routing and file-system sharing via local network bridges. Now, the moment an audio asset is written to disk, WSL detects it, computes the spectral footprint, and signals REAPER to instantiate the corresponding audio channel. It is a seamless convergence of code syntax and signal path.

Building a 4-Core WSL Bridge for Audio Automation

I've spent years living in two seemingly separate worlds: the structured, logical realm of software architecture and the expressive, chaotic world of progressive rock and session recording. But over time, I've realized they are the same thing: Signal & Syntax. The rules of energy flow, impedance matching, and feedback loops apply equally to both domains.

### System Patterns in Music
When you record an album, you are managing parallel flows. You have transient onset alignment, phase coherence across multiple microphone preamps, and harmonic saturation paths. That's no different than architecting microservices with distributed message queues, database transaction boundaries, and caching layers. Both require keeping a clean, low-latency path from the source to the output.

My work at RocketTree Labs is constantly inspired by music. When we build systems, we are matching the impedance of user needs with technological capability. If the connection isn't tight, you get reflection, loss, and noise. By treating our codebases as instruments, we can fine-tune their parameters, adjust their thresholds, and let them resonate with the user's intent. The ultimate goal is to remove the friction, creating a clean, direct signal path.

From Seattle Indie to System Architecture: My Hybrid Signal Path

Vynl.pro started as a napkin sketch: what if a musician could have a universal operating system for their entire career? Bookings, routing, networking, promotional assets, rider management — all unified in one platform built specifically for the realities of touring artists. The music industry is full of fragmented platforms that extract value; we wanted to build a tool that empowers the creator.

### The Architecture Problem
The central challenge was building a system that serves two dramatically different users simultaneously: the touring artist who needs speed, mobile-first simplicity, and reliable offline access on the road; and the venue owner who needs robust scheduling, contract management, and real-time analytics. The solution was a bifurcated data model with a shared event graph at its core, built in Next.js 15 with edge-cached endpoints and a Prisma/PostgreSQL persistence layer.

### Edge Cache Routing
Touring artists often find themselves in dead zones with zero cell service. To make Vynl.pro work under these conditions, we designed a service-worker-driven offline storage system that caches scheduling data and synchronizes it immediately upon reconnecting. This ensures the routing coordinates, venue contacts, and contract sheets are always accessible. Signal integrity must be maintained, even in the middle of the Flathead wilderness.

Designing Vynl.pro — A Universal Musician OS

Independent music is facing an existential crisis, and it's not a creative one. The math is simple, brutal, and entirely stacked against the performer. Today, a stream on a major DSP pays out roughly **$0.003 to $0.004**. If you do the math, that means an independent artist needs hundreds of thousands of plays just to pay their monthly electric bill, let alone cover studio time, string changes, or guitar maintenance. 

Algorithmic playlists have become the ultimate corporate gatekeepers. They act as automated filters, locking independent artists behind pay-for-play discovery modes and pitch metrics that homogenize sound. If you don't snap your snare to the exact frequency the algorithm favors, or if your acoustic slide intro is 'too long for average retention metrics,' the algorithm quietly buries your signal in the digital dust.

This is the corporate stranglehold we are fighting. We have traded the old, parasitic label gatekeepers for modern, automated software middlemen who extract 99% of the value before the artist ever sees a dime.

### What Vynl.pro is Going to Be
This mathematical decay is why I founded `vynl.pro` under the RocketTree Labs umbrella. We aren't building another music player; we are building a **Musician's Operating System** focused entirely on booking and routing direct gigs. 

Independent touring bands don't need algorithms to tell them how to write songs; they need data to tell them where their listeners actually live. Vynl.pro maps real listener density directly against indie-friendly, cooperative venues. It acts as an edge-cached gig matchmaking matrix, allowing artists to bypass booking agents entirely and lock in routes with transparent, crowd-backed guarantees.

Instead of chasing a fraction of a cent on a corporate playlist, Vynl.pro helps musicians book physical rooms, trade gig leads with other touring artists, and sell physical vinyl and merch directly to the people standing in front of the stage. Direct connection is the only signal that cannot be compressed or algorithmicized.

Direct-to-Fan vs The 0.003 Cent Streaming Loop (The DSP Stranglehold)

The Flathead water runs slow, cold, and dark—an unread page from a medieval grimoire. We walk the stones, seeking the quiet, zero-latency state that exists beneath all human computation. The mountains rise around us, their granite peaks reflecting the early morning light like a natural oscilloscope.

Our Next.js edge-cached query loops are behaving like digital ferns today, drawing nutrients from Prisma database soil. There is a specific kind of silence that only exists in Columbia Falls in January. The snow muffles the pine woods, the Flathead River runs slow and gray under ice sheets, and the world shrinks down to the glow of vacuum tubes and the warmth of a wood stove. This winter, I locked myself in the mixing room to track my fifth record, **Low Fires** (2025).

After years of playing on massive, high-speed tours and running complex corporate development cycles, working completely isolated in the Montana wilderness was a shock to the system. No click tracks. No session musicians. No digital replacement tools. Just a solid-state microphone, a vintage Gibson acoustic, and a 4-track tape machine running hot.

### The Solder-Smoke Therapy
When you are working completely on your own, isolation can quickly turn into an echo chamber. I found my grounding on the studio workbench. When a vocal take wasn't hitting, or when the slide guitar part felt too clinical, I stopped tracking, fired up the soldering iron, and built hardware. 

I spent days hand-wiring a boutique Germanium fuzz box from scratch—chasing the specific, warm, gritty dirt of old 1960s transistors. The physical assembly of copper, resistors, and solder smoke acts as a perfect cognitive reset. You aren't editing lines of code or pitch-correcting wave transients; you are physically routing electricity to shape tone. 

By the time the fuzz box was finished, my head was clean. I plugged it straight into a tube amp, cranked the master volume, and ran. The result is the raw, un-sterilized guitar grit that drives the title track of `Low Fires`—a ten-song confession recorded not to snap to a grid, but to capture the actual friction and pulse of a human playing in a quiet room.

The Isolation Engine: Assembling 'Low Fires' Alone under Montana Skies

We are running the CUDA optimization scripts at 4 AM, chasing a technical white rabbit into the deep neon dark. The compiler log prints lines of dense text that look suspiciously like medieval star charts. The terminal glows green against the dark pine walls of the treehouse studio, projecting complex math formulas onto the ceiling.

### The Four-Headed Beast
The 4-core WSL bridge is fully awake, breathing hot solder-smoke in the treehouse. We route stoner modular synthesizer sweeps through the Linux daemon, letting the physical voltage map transient grids into the code. This blend of mathematical precision and analog chaos is the essence of our alchemical studies. The variables align like stellar coordinates under an autumn sky.

### Mental Geometry
The old shadows of anxiety and addiction are always circling in the dark, but we have re-wired the cognitive circuit. The hatter is mad, yes, but he is kind, zen, and knows how to solder copper roots. By focusing on the geometry of wave signals, we transform the noise of the mind into a structured syntax of creation.

The Mad Hatter Grimoire: CUDA & Astrological Loops

I hear it all the time from musicians in small towns or suburban valleys: 'Our scene is dead. There are no clubs. Nobody cares about live music anymore.' 

My answer is always the same: **Don't complain. Build an outpost.**

If your local scene is dead, it means the traditional, commercial venue models have failed. They've been priced out by skyrocketing commercial rents, or they've turned their stages into generic karaoke bars to survive. The solution isn't to beg corporate bookers for a slot; the solution is to bypass them entirely and create a cooperative, underground micro-booking network.

### The Micro-Booking Manifesto
To start a music scene from nothing, you must redefine what a venue actually is. A venue is not a bar with a liquor license; a venue is any space where people can gather, listen, and buy merch.

- **Reclaim the Un-Traditional:** Warehouses, machine shops, print shops, barns, garages, and basements. Some of the most influential music movements in history started on concrete floors next to lathe machines and lawnmowers.
- **Cooperative Capital:** Don't charge drink minimums. Instead, set up a strict, direct-to-artist door cover. 100% of the door goes to the touring artist. The local band opens for free, using the slot to build their crowd and split the production labor.
- **The Touring Shelter:** Touring is brutally expensive. If you want great artists to travel to your dead town, you have to offer shelter. Build an underground artist hospitality pipeline. Cook them a warm meal, give them a safe place to sleep, and put gas in their van. They will remember your scene forever, tell their friends, and your outpost will become a staple on the DIY circuit.

By taking the profit motive out of the venue and placing the value entirely on the performance and community, you create an immune system against dead music scenes. You don't need a corporate booking agent to validate your work. You just need a concrete floor, a solid PA, and a room full of people ready to listen.

Underground Outposts: How to Build a Music Scene from Scratch

The Telefunken EF86 pentode vacuum tubes are biased perfectly today. Their glowing orange filaments look like tiny, fiery roots growing inside the dark, metallic chassis soil. We sit in silence, watching the heat rise. The electrical signal travels from the transformer, through the vacuum space, and into our monitors, vibrating the air with warm analog energy.

### The Scripted Silence
We are building the early versions of python-driven key/BPM analysis loops to automate the DAW. It is not just system utility; it is cognitive therapy. Writing low-level Lua scripts to snap wave transients to a grid is the only way we know to quiet a dry, hyper-vigilant brain running at 96kHz without compression. Snap the transient, measure the offset, recalculate the tempo drift.

As we press our fingers against the steel frets, we are modifying the active length of the signal path, changing the resonant frequency. By combining this physical geometry with digital automation scripts, we create a hybrid syntax that captures the performance while maintaining perfect phase alignment.

For almost twenty years, alcohol was my stage armor. It was the filter that blocked out the blinding stage lights, quieted the low-frequency chatter of the crowd, and numbed the persistent, whispering voice of imposter syndrome. I thought it made me loose, dangerous, and expressive. 

In reality, it was just a high-latency buffer between my mind and the strings.

When I walked out onto my first stage completely sober, the anxiety was absolute, physical, and chest-crushing. My hands shook. The stage lights felt like interrogation lamps. The silence between songs was an empty, echoing vacuum. Without the warm, dampening filter of three fingers of whiskey in my system, my nervous system was running at 96kHz with zero compression. Every cough in the audience, every clinking glass at the bar, and every minor pitch drift on my fretboard felt amplified by a factor of ten.

### The Anatomy of Sobriety
Stage anxiety is a physiological loop: your brain interprets the crowd's focus as a threat, dumps adrenaline into your blood, and your fingers lock up. The temptation to reach for the liquid armor is almost overwhelming.

But if you sit in that terror for three songs, something miraculous happens: the threat becomes a connection. 

When you play sober, you are fully, completely present. You feel the physical friction of the steel strings under your calluses. You hear the actual acoustic resonance of the wood body against your chest. Your tempo isn't slurred by alcohol; it's locked to your actual heartbeat. The voice that comes out isn't filtered or hidden behind a drunken shout—it's raw, vulnerable, and soaring.

I realized that the 'danger' I was chasing with alcohol was artificial. The real danger—and the real beauty—is standing in front of a room full of strangers completely naked, with nothing but your voice, your hands, and your honesty. That level of presence is the most powerful signal an artist can ever transmit.

Dry Stage: Sober Performance and the Anatomy of Stage Anxiety

December in Columbia Falls is a silent, white parchment. After 30 days of inpatient solitude in the Montana woods, the world has shrunk down to the ancient, hermetic elements: fire, wood, glass, and family. The temperature outside has dropped below zero, but inside the studio, the air is thick with the scent of cedar and spruce.

### Alchemical Transmutation
Our vintage cast-iron wood stove is a medieval furnace. It digests rough pine bark and transmutes cold winter snow into warm, protective ash. We sit with our acoustic guitar, tracking a single dry chord. No plugins, no compression. It is a protective herb pinned directly to the traveler's soul—a survival map sketched in the dark. The transient decay of the chord matches the falling snow outside.

It is a grounding sequence that helps us find the true zero of our creative state, preparing the canvas for the next phase of work.

The Hermetic Solace of Columbia Falls Ash

In November of 2023, I walked away from the computers, the mixing desks, the touring schedules, and the noise. I checked myself into a 30-day inpatient rehabilitation facility in the Montana woods. My system was completely overloaded; the signal-to-noise ratio had drifted so far into the red that the music had become an echo, and my life was running on fumes.

For 30 days, my world was reduced to absolute simplicity. No phone. No internet. No code editors. No complex DAW routing. Just a quiet room, a notebook, an acoustic guitar, and the cold, clean air of the Flathead Valley.

### The Creative Reset
At first, the silence is terrifying. When you remove the artificial stimulants and the numbing agents, your brain doesn't know how to idle. It runs hot, looping through old regrets, systemic anxieties, and creative self-doubt. You realize how much of your artistic output was driven by friction, chaos, and self-destruction.

I re-learned the grounding weight of family—the quiet, immovable anchor that kept me tethered when the road's chaos tried to pull me apart. In that absolute isolation, I reconnected with the raw songwriting signal. That quiet room is where the first sketches of `Low Fires` were born—not as a product for the marketplace, but as a survival map. I realized that code and music are beautiful, but they must serve life, not replace it.

The 30-Day Solitude: Re-wiring the Creative Brain in Columbia Falls

I chose to stop. I quietly resigned from the tour, packed my cases, and traded the stadium glare for the quiet woods of Columbia Falls, Montana. It was a terrifying choice. People in the industry told me I was throwing away my career, that I was crazy to walk away from that level of prestige and paycheck.

But walking away wasn't career suicide; it was self-salvage. You can't record a clean track if your signal chain is full of static. I chose to trade the road for rehab, trading stadium applause for a chance to reclaim my life, my family, and my authentic relationship with the guitar.

This week, I locked myself in the soldering laboratory in my Kalispell Mix Room to build a pair of boutique Germanium fuzz pedals and hand-wire a vintage-spec vacuum tube microphone preamplifier. I wanted to capture the gritty, organic harmonics that you can only get when physical electricity runs through real transistors and transformer iron.

Why Germanium? Modern silicon transistors are precise, efficient, and consistent. But Germanium transistors—the early, temperamental semiconductors used in the 1960s—have a soft, musical clipping character. They react dynamically to the volume knob of your guitar, cleaning up into a sparkling, warm chime, and breaking out into a thick, singing, velcro-like fuzz when you dig in. They are highly sensitive to temperature and voltage, making them feel like a living, breathing instrument.

### Hand-Wiring Vacuum Tube Warmth
